What Are Roller Compactors?

Roller compactors are a continuous, directly compressible, dry granulation system. The main use for roller compactors is to improve material flow characteristics, as well as increase material density. This is due to the vertical product flow system that uses a tapered feed screw. This allows for the delivery of the material to the fully contained compaction zone of the rolls. And increases product yields and minimizes product fines.

The overall aim for many roller compactors in the pharmaceutical industry is to use its unique roll system to compact powders into sheets or briquettes. These compacted sheets are then milled to produce specifically sized granules. If there are any particles that perhaps fall outside the specified range, they can easily be recirculated back into the machine to be reprocessed into the desired size.

The granule size produced by roller compactors varies by roll pressure, not roll gap. Most utilize a floating roll that ensures the necessary compaction forces are consistent to address variations of incoming material flow. The gap between the fixed roll and the floating roll will always vary as necessary to ensure a constant compaction force is applied.

Choosing Roller Compactors for Pharmaceutical Applications

A roller compactor is used by many within the pharmaceutical industry for tablet manufacturing and powdered fillings for capsules and sachets. The overall purpose of this machine is to agglomerate the powders containing active ingredients in order to form uniformly sized granules. So choosing the right roller compactor for a task is simply a matter of matching its features and engineering to your applications and needs.

The process completed by a roller compactor involves feeding various particle sizes of active ingredients, plus any excipients like lactose, cellulose between two textured press rollers. These press rollers produce a compacted powder that can then be further milled to a uniform and cohesive powder that is ready for final tablet manufacturing.

Using roller compactors in laboratory and pharmaceutical settings for the development of formula helps to overcome any challenges of inconsistent bulk properties and fine powder characteristics. All while adapting the substances to tableting or fillings.

Overall, the use of a roller compactor allows for a higher performance manufacturing of capsules and tablets. Roller compactors will significantly improve the bulk density of the processed powders.

Considerations Before Purchasing

There are some important considerations to think about before purchasing roller compactors. Some common considerations include:

  • total cost of ownership
  • ease of cleaning
  • suitability for high containment manufacturing
  • suitability for processing target substances and ingredients

And as with any piece of pharmaceutical machinery, there are operational challenges when using roller compactors. These challenges include the overcoming loss of recompactability and the formation of non-compounded powder residues in dry granulation.

What is a Chilsonator?

A chilsonator, which also goes by the name of a dry granulation roll compactor, is an important piece of equipment in the pharmaceutical industry. Its purpose is to process fine powders into densified sheets without the need for binders or water. These sheets can then be further granulated in order to obtain the desired particle size for distribution.

When properly operating, the chilsonator employs mechanical pressure that is exerted by two counter-rotating rolls. The fine powders are fed between these rolls. As the volume decreases in the region of maximum pressure, then the material is compacted into a solid sheet or is compact. The end result of this process is a densified sheet that can be further processed in order to create uniform granules.

At Michael Benalt, Inc, we have a great selection of used chilsonators for sale for use by many in the pharmaceutical or processing industries. Trust the equipment when you buy from us!
